‘Spain is not racist’. La Liga President on the fight against racism and Vinicius' statements
Not long ago, Real Madrid winger Vinícius Jr. suggested that Spain should be stripped of the right to host the 2030 World Cup due to ongoing racism. This statement did not go unnoticed by the president of La Liga, who addressed the league's efforts in combating racism.
Details: Javier Tebas stated that neither Spain nor football itself is inherently racist, and that any incidents are isolated and individual cases.
Quote: "Fifteen years ago, there were chants from groups of people, but now we see significant cooperation from the spectators. The change is very noticeable. The next step is to eliminate these chants entirely or reduce them to a minimum. We must also enforce sanctions for such behavior on social media," Tebas said.
He added that the key point in Vinícius' situation is that it triggered a moment of reckoning. Similar incidents happened with Iñaki Williams in Barcelona and Akapo in Cádiz. Vinícius’ case has raised widespread awareness.
Reminder: Recently, Real Madrid star Vinícius Jr. has been outspoken about racism in Spain, even calling for the country to be stripped of its right to host the 2030 World Cup.
However, it seems that only the Real forward is vocal about this issue, as other Black players in La Liga do not appear to see it as a widespread problem.
