The 2026 FIFA World Cup is just around the corner, but there are growing concerns regarding the tournament's matches and how long they could potentially last.
Details: According to The Athletic, the issue stems from safety regulations in the United States. If lightning is detected within approximately 13 kilometres of a stadium, the match must be suspended immediately.
Furthermore, play can only resume after a 30-minute period has passed without any additional lightning strikes being recorded. If another strike is detected during that time, the 30-minute countdown starts again from the beginning.
As a result, some matches could face delays of several hours, as was the case during the FIFA Club World Cup.
Reminder: The Morocco national team recently encountered unexpected and highly unpleasant logistical problems on the eve of the World Cup.
