Senegal President Declares Nationwide Public Holiday After Historic AFCON 2025 Victory Over Morocco
The President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has officially declared Monday, 19 January 2026, a public holiday across the entire country in celebration of Senegal’s historic triumph at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The announcement comes after the Lions of Teranga’s memorable victory over Morocco in the final, a result that secured Senegal the continental title and sparked massive celebrations in Dakar and other major cities nationwide.
In a statement released by the presidency, the public holiday was described as a way to allow citizens to fully participate in the nationwide celebrations. The government also emphasized that the decision is meant to honour the national team for their exceptional performance and the pride they have brought to Senegal on the African stage.
