Once a UEFA Cup winner and Champions League contender, Schalke now finds itself struggling mid-table in Germany’s second division, grappling with a massive debt of €170 million. With few funding options, club executive Matthias Tillmann is looking to loyal fans for support – and he has a plan.

Details: According to Bild, Tillmann aims to attract fan investments, creating a sponsorship conglomerate that will hold club shares. In exchange, supporters will receive shares in Schalke’s home ground, the Veltins-Arena. However, these investors won’t see any increase in their share value, as the investment opportunities are limited to club members and corporate partners only.

Reminder: In 2023 alone, Schalke spent €16 million on debt repayments and interest. The financial struggles have taken a toll on the pitch, with the Gelsenkirchen-based team currently sitting 13th in the second division after eight games, just two points above the relegation zone.
