River Move Imminent as Salas Bids Farewell to Racing

Maximiliano Salas has said goodbye to Racing and is set to become River Plate's first signing of the transfer window. The striker cleared out his locker at the club’s training ground and will soon activate his €8 million release clause, after Racing refused to negotiate.
The move comes after a personal call from Marcelo Gallardo, who made Salas a priority target. Despite having a deal in place to renew with Racing until 2028, the left-footed forward changed course following River’s approach. Everything is now in motion to finalize the transfer.
River want Salas available as soon as possible, ideally for the start of preseason this Wednesday in Ezeiza. If the release clause isn't executed in time, his arrival may be delayed until Thursday. The final step involves either a notary visiting the players’ union or sending a formal letter requesting Racing’s bank details to transfer the money.
Though rare in Argentine football, River are breaking convention by triggering the clause, a move that’s stirred some controversy. So far, there have been no public complaints from either club, and Gallardo downplayed any tension with Racing president Diego Milito. But fans have made their feelings known: Salas was booed during a friendly against Olimpia in Paraguay, and banners were unfurled against him and Gallardo.
Salas, who began his career at All Boys and later played in Chile and Mexico, joined Racing in 2024. He played a key role in their Copa Sudamericana and Recopa titles and scored 13 goals in 76 appearances. Now, he’s headed to Núñez to wear the River shirt.
