Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina has made a proposal to reduce the number of teams playing in Serie A from 20 to 18.

Gravina believes that this move will increase the attractiveness of the championship, as well as reduce the number of injuries to players due to the simplification of the calendar.

The reduction is favoured by top Serie A clubs, who want to reduce the number of matches per season. However, smaller clubs are against it as they will suffer losses.

14 votes are needed for the decision to be made. It is expected that it will be almost unrealistic to gather so many because of the stance of the smaller clubs.

Earlier, a similar decision was made by the French Ligue 1. Also in France, the League Cup was cancelled.
