Erling Haaland's controversial goal in the Manchester derby sparked heated debate, but official VAR data confirmed that the goal was correctly awarded. The Norwegian was indeed onside when the pass was played, with the position of Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu proving to be the key factor.
The incident occurred during the fourth-round Premier League match between Manchester United and Manchester City. Haaland got in behind the home side's defenders and sent the ball into the net, but the moment immediately became the subject of controversy over a possible offside.
Following a VAR review, the goal was awarded. An official illustration of the forward's position was later published: Dorgu's foot kept Haaland onside, meaning there were no grounds for an offside decision.
The goal therefore stood despite the numerous debates surrounding the incident. For Haaland, it was his ninth goal in Manchester derbies against Manchester United.
VAR has effectively put an end to the debate over the controversial incident. The published material showed that the Norwegian had not breached the rules and that Manchester City's goal was correctly awarded.
