Osimhen Nears Yekini’s Historic Super Eagles Record
Victor Osimhen is closing in on a historic milestone as Nigeria’s Super Eagles face Morocco in the semifinal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat. The Galatasaray striker needs two goals to draw level with the late Rashidi Yekini, fondly called “Goals-father”, who scored 37 goals in 58 matches for Nigeria. A hat trick in the clash, already dubbed “Final Before the Final”, would make Osimhen the country’s outright leading scorer.
Yekini, African Footballer of the Year in 1993, scored Nigeria’s first World Cup goal in 1994 and led the line as the ‘Golden Generation’ won AFCON in Tunisia, finishing top scorer with five goals. He died in 2012 aged 48.
At 27, Osimhen has 51 caps and will be supported by Alex Iwobi, Akor Adams and Ademola Lookman. Iwobi is set for his 96th cap. Nigeria train at the venue at 6.15pm today, ahead of Wednesday night.
