AFCON 2025: Bounou Named Man of the Match as Morocco Beat Nigeria on Penalties
Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was the standout performer as the Atlas Lions booked their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, defeating Nigeria in a tense penalty shootout.
In front of a passionate, capacity crowd at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat, Bounou proved decisive after the semi-final ended level. The Al Hilal goalkeeper kept his composure under immense pressure, producing two vital saves during the shootout to secure a 4–2 victory for Morocco.
Bounou first anticipated Samuel Chukwueze’s effort brilliantly, diving early to block the shot. Moments later, he stretched out a strong hand to deny Bruno Onyemaechi, sending the home fans into celebration and confirming Morocco’s place in the final.
Morocco will now turn their attention to a daunting final against Senegal, scheduled for Sunday at the same venue, the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
