Orlando Pirates dethrone Mamelodi Sundowns on top of the Betway Premiership after a 2-0 win over Durban City

Orlando Pirates moved to the top of the Betway Premiership standings today following a resounding victory over Durban City.

The Sea Robbers moved three points clear of defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns with both teams having played 12 matches.

Interestingly, despite Sundowns being defending champions of this championship, it was Pirates, who were on top of the standings this time last season.

This means for them to detour the Brazilians plans to defend their title, they would need to be as consistent as possible.

Evidence Makgopa and Patrick Maswanganyi scored in each half to beat Gavin Hunt’s City at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

It was a match which also saw USA-bound defender Mbekezli Mbokazi return to the starting line-up, something which further brought mystery on whether the player is most likely to leave or not.

Mbokazi is said to be the subject of R50-million transfer fee between Pirates and Chicago Fire in the MLS.

Having defended with aplomb in this tie, Mbokazi did show his usual brilliance and this win is also a morale booster for Pirates ahead of next week’s carling Knockout final in Polokwane against Marumo Gallants
