No disciplinary absences ahead of the derby. Kaizer Chiefs keep key defenders
South African club Kaizer Chiefs avoided any personnel losses ahead of the country's biggest match, keeping their key defenders available on the eve of Saturday's Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates.
Details: As reported by sports portal kickoff.com, AmaKhosi's 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy in the round of 32 of the Carling Cup followed the perfect script for the coaching staff. Centre-back Inacio Miguel, who risked missing the derby through an accumulation of yellow cards, was left out of the squad for the cup tie as a precaution, guaranteeing his involvement in the weekend's headline fixture.
The coaching staff showed similar tactical caution with Thabo Moloisane, who had also picked up three yellow cards. After putting in a reliable performance for most of the cup match, the defender was substituted late on for Zitha Kwinika to eliminate any risk of receiving a fourth booking, giving both leading defenders the green light to start at FNB Stadium.
It is worth noting that three other key members of Kaizer Chiefs' first-team squad remain one booking away from suspension — Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Pule Mmodi and Sifiso Hlongo, each of whom has two yellow cards to his name. The upcoming clash with Orlando Pirates promises to be fiercely contested and highly emotional, and having an optimal defensive lineup could prove decisive in the battle for victory in the most prestigious derby on the African continent.
