Neymar Says He Nearly Joined Fluminense for Club World Cup

Neymar Jr. revealed he came close to joining Fluminense for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Speaking on Flow Podcast, the Brazilian star said he seriously considered leaving Santos—where he has yet to renew his contract—to play the global tournament with the Rio de Janeiro side.
“Fluminense was very close to happening, but I decided to keep training a bit more,” said Neymar, who has been recovering from a major injury sustained in October 2023 while playing for Brazil. Though he claims to be physically fit, he admitted he still needs time to regain full match sharpness.
His comments come just weeks before his contract with Santos expires on June 30. When asked by BandSports about the chances of staying with the club, Neymar smiled and replied, “From 0 to 10? A 7!”
Despite the uncertainty, Neymar emphasized his deep connection to Santos: “I was born here and I want to die here. It’s my place in the world, the club of my life,” he said during an appearance at an event hosted by his foundation.
While Fluminense opened their Club World Cup campaign with a goalless draw against Borussia Dortmund, Neymar continues his recovery, stating he’s working hard “to feel whole again and compete at the highest level.” His future remains undecided, but the emotional bond with Santos could tip the scale toward a renewal.
