Monterrey Eyes Sergi Gómez as Key Signing Ahead of Club World Cup

Monterrey may soon land a seasoned reinforcement for the upcoming Club World Cup. As reported by Posta Deportes, the Mexican powerhouse is in advanced talks to sign Sergi Gómez, the 33-year-old Spanish defender recently released by Espanyol. With his contract expiring on June 30, Gómez is open to a new chapter abroad—and Rayados’ offer appears to be the front-runner.
“My idea is to seek an adventure abroad… I want to keep enjoying football,” Gómez told Radio Arenys, signaling his readiness to leave Spain. A product of La Masía, with stints at Sevilla, Celta, and over 100 appearances for Espanyol, the defender’s profile matches Monterrey’s need for international experience and leadership in a tournament that demands both.
If the deal is finalized before FIFA’s June 10 registration deadline, Gómez would be eligible to join the squad competing on the global stage. Monterrey is building a roster with balance and maturity, and the Spaniard—available as a free agent—offers exactly that without transfer costs.
Though he played just 12 matches this season, starting six, his leadership was praised by Espanyol’s manager Manolo González: “He showed me what being a true professional means.” Gómez, in turn, bid farewell to the club with appreciation: “Whenever I can, I’ll be back in the stands to support Espanyol.”
Now, with Monterrey on the horizon, Gómez has a chance to end his career in North America, bringing European pedigree and calm to a defense that hopes to shine under international lights.
