Lionel Messi has revealed what he considers the greatest goal of his career—and it’s not one of his famous solo runs or a World Cup screamer. As part of a philanthropic initiative, the Argentina captain chose his headed goal in the 2009 UEFA Champions League final against Manchester United. The project, titled A Goal in Life and led by the Inter Miami CF Foundation, aims to merge sports, art, and social impact by raising funds for educational programs in underserved communities.

The goal, scored on May 27, 2009, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, sealed Barcelona’s 2-0 win and capped a historic treble-winning season. Messi rose over 2.7 meters to connect with a pinpoint cross from Xavi, beating goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar with a perfectly placed header—an unforgettable image from a golden era for Barça.

“For what it meant, and the moment it came in, it’s always been my favorite goal,” said Messi. “It was the perfect ending to an incredible year. There are other goals that were more beautiful or emotional, but this one means the most to me.”

The goal will now be transformed into a groundbreaking digital artwork by Turkish-American artist Refik Anadol, who specializes in AI-driven art. Using advanced biosensors, machine learning, and detailed data points from the play, Anadol will recreate the moment as a unique visual and emotional piece to be auctioned by Christie’s. Proceeds will support access to education and social inclusion initiatives.

The artwork will be previewed online on June 11 and exhibited in New York from July 15 to 22. The auction will run concurrently on Christie’s digital platform. UEFA has granted the necessary rights to use the footage for this charitable effort.

The campaign’s promotional video, narrated by Morgan Freeman, has already surpassed 50 million views on Instagram. In Spanish-speaking markets, actor Guillermo Francella lends his voice to the narration. Fans and media had speculated wildly about Messi’s pick—some expected his second goal against France in the 2022 World Cup final, his Maradona-esque dribble vs. Getafe, or his shirt-holding celebration at the Bernabéu. His final choice, however, stood out for its personal and symbolic value.

“This goal is more than just a memory—it’s a message,” said Messi. “It’s about what we achieved together as a team, and now it’s also about helping others. That makes it even more special.”

With this campaign, sport and art come together in a meaningful way, celebrating not just one of Messi’s defining moments, but also aiming to inspire change beyond the pitch.
