Manchester City's new head coach Enzo Maresca is set to overhaul the captaincy selection process that was in place under Pep Guardiola. According to The Athletic, the Italian manager wants to personally appoint the team's new leader following Bernardo Silva's departure to Real Madrid.
One of the top candidates for the new role is Phil Foden. The 26-year-old academy graduate has become a key figure in the City dressing room after the exit of several seasoned players. Another contender could be Marc Guéhi, who joined City in January. The defender previously captained Crystal Palace and the England national team.
It's worth recalling that under Guardiola, the players themselves traditionally elected the captain. In recent years, the armband has been worn by Fernandinho, Ilkay Gündogan, and Kevin De Bruyne. Last season, the Spaniard departed from the usual system and personally named a leadership group consisting of Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, Erling Haaland, and Rodri.
The situation could change if Rodri leaves, as he has been linked with a move to Barcelona. Maresca faces one of his first major decisions in charge as he looks to appoint City's new leader.
