Maduka Okoye Says Challenging Watford Spell Helped Shape His Growth as a Player
Nigeria and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has revealed that his challenging period at English side Watford played a key role in shaping his personal and professional development. The Super Eagles shot-stopper shared these insights during his exclusive interview with Footy-Africa.
Okoye joined Watford in 2021 for a fee of around €5 million following an impressive spell at Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam. However, his time at Vicarage Road proved difficult, as he struggled for game time and remained the club’s third-choice goalkeeper throughout his stay, never making a league appearance.
Reflecting on those tough months, Okoye opened up about the obstacles he faced:
“My time at Watford was challenging, a lot was happening, not only on the pitch but also off it. I was younger and dealing with many things at the same time, including recovering from shoulder surgery. It was a tough period,” Maduka Okoye told Footy-Africa.
Now thriving in Serie A, Okoye has become an important figure at Udinese. He also addressed recent transfer rumours, making it clear where his loyalty and focus lie:
“I’m always happy when there are rumours, because it means I’m doing well and that clubs might want to have a future with me. But at this moment, I’m very happy at Udinese. I will give everything for the club, and my focus is fully here. Of course, I also want to take a step forward in my career at some point, but right now my full focus is on Udinese.” he concluded.
