Álvarez Emerges as Leading Candidate for Chile’s Next Coach

Per TyC Sports, in the wake of Chile’s near-certain elimination from 2026 qualifying, Gustavo Álvarez, current manager of Universidad de Chile, has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Ricardo Gareca as national team head coach.
Gareca’s position is now in grave jeopardy. A recent defeat to Argentina pushed Chile to the brink, and only a string of wins combined with opponents dropping points could preserve his tenure . Álvarez himself dismissed speculation, stating, “I’m focused on the present, I have a contract with La U”. Meanwhile, the ANFP is already considering options to rebuild from the upcoming match in Bolivia and beyond.
Media commentary has bolstered Álvarez’s candidacy. Analyst Danilo Díaz praised him for bringing “security” after strong performances at Huachipato and Universidad de Chile. Veteran player Francisco Las Heras named him “the best choice” to guide the national squad.
As Gareca braces for what could be his final match in La Paz next Tuesday, his stint—initiated in January 2024—has failed to elevate a team languishing at the bottom of the CONMEBOL standings.
