After a contentious video went viral online, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) opened an investigation into claims of match-fixing involving Patrick Matasi, the goalie for the national side.
With 30 caps for Kenya, Matasi is now a member of Kakamega Homeboyz. He last played for his country in October during the AFCON qualifiers.
Suspicious Footage Raises Concerns
The BBC has not independently verified the veracity of the viral film, which purportedly shows Matasi negotiating a deal to alter the outcome of a league match.
In response to the accusations, Cleophas Shimanyula, the owner of Kakamega Homeboyz, told the BBC: "I spoke to him, and he was shocked by the video." He claimed he had no knowledge of match-fixing.
FKF’s Zero-Tolerance Approach
The Kenyan FA has vowed to uphold the integrity of its competitions, pledging full cooperation with FIFA, CAF, and other relevant bodies in the investigation.
In a statement, FKF reaffirmed: "We maintain a firm stance against match-fixing and are committed to ensuring the fairness of our competitions."
The federation also assured that the investigation will follow FKF’s match-fixing regulations and FIFA’s guidelines to guarantee a fair, transparent, and thorough process.
"The rights of the player and his club will be respected, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings," the statement concluded.
