Panama arrived with renewed confidence after narrowly defeating Guatemala in their second match of the 2025 Gold Cup, all but securing a spot in the quarterfinals. But hours before their crucial match against Jamaica, head coach Thomas Christiansen received a major setback: Gustavo Herrera suffered an injury during training and is now a doubt for the rest of the tournament.
The forward, called up to replace the injured Cecilio Waterman and José Fajardo, sustained a muscular issue following a collision with a teammate on Saturday. Though results from medical tests are still pending, early indications suggest he will miss Tuesday’s clash — and if it's a serious sprain, his participation in the tournament could be over.
Herrera’s absence would leave Panama significantly weakened in attack, where options are already limited. Christiansen had planned rotations to manage fatigue after back-to-back games, but now must adjust without one of his main offensive threats at a critical stage of the competition.
While the squad remains calm overall, concerns grow over accumulated physical strain. The Danish coach insists on keeping composure, yet Herrera’s fate could prove decisive for Panama’s short-term fortunes in this year’s Gold Cup.
