Hernán López Muñoz Set to Join Argentinos Juniors After MLS Stint

After being linked to clubs like Racing, Vélez, and Estudiantes in recent transfer windows, Hernán López Muñoz is reportedly close to joining Argentinos Juniors—home of his great-uncle Diego Maradona. According to TyC Sports, negotiations with San Jose Earthquakes are in advanced stages for a one-year loan deal with a purchase option.
The attacking midfielder is currently vacationing in Argentina and is said to be enthusiastic about the move, drawn by his connection to La Paternal. Although under contract with the MLS side until late 2026, López Muñoz saw limited action this season, making just five appearances due to a shoulder injury. Since arriving in the U.S., he has scored nine goals in 37 games.
Once considered a top candidate to replace Juanfer Quintero at Racing or Claudio Aquino at Vélez, and targeted by Estudiantes with backing from investor Foster Gillett, the 23-year-old now seems poised to join a club known for developing technical talents.
López Muñoz began his career at River Plate, debuting in 2019, but never secured a regular spot. His breakout came at Godoy Cruz in 2023, prompting a $7 million move to MLS. Now, a return to Argentine football could offer a fresh start and a fitting backdrop for his style—and legacy.
