Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, has become one of the co-owners of San Diego, a club competing in Major League Soccer (MLS). The artist announced the news on her X page.
Tems joins a high-profile ownership group that includes World Cup winner Juan Mata, baseball star Manny Machado, actress Issa Rae, and others. Notably, this makes Tems the first African woman to co-own an MLS football club.
"Tems is a globally significant artist who will help us to reach new audiences and spread the word about our unique project, which of course has its foundations in sub-Saharan Africa through the unique Right to Dream organization," said San Diego chairman Sir Mohamed Mansour.
The club's management hopes to leverage Tems’ popularity to boost its global visibility and support young talents through Right to Dream.
Tems is a major figure in the music industry, having won two Grammy Awards and earned an Academy Award nomination.
