Giakoumakis Eyes MLS Return After Title-Winning Spell with Cruz Azul

Greece international Giorgos Giakoumakis is likely to leave Cruz Azul this summer and hopes to return to Major League Soccer, according to GIVEMESPORT sources familiar with the situation. After a productive stint in Mexico, the 30-year-old forward is exploring options to rejoin the league, where he found success with Atlanta United.
Giakoumakis scored 24 goals in just under 3,000 minutes during his time in MLS before being sold to Cruz Azul for $10.5 million, following a breakdown in contract talks. In Mexico, he remained effective with nine goals and eight assists in under 2,000 minutes, helping his side win the Concacaf Champions Cup. However, Cruz Azul’s attacking depth has limited his long-term prospects.
Charlotte FC could be a landing spot, with an open Designated Player slot available. Yet, the club is not urgently seeking a new striker unless Patrick Agyemang departs. Charlotte turned down a $4 million bid from Luton Town in January and is bracing for further offers this summer.
Reports linking Giakoumakis to LAFC have been dismissed by sources close to the negotiations. Interest has also surfaced from clubs in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, though no formal talks have been confirmed.
With the summer window opening, Giakoumakis stands out as an experienced goalscorer with a proven record in MLS — and may soon find himself back in familiar territory.
