First day of the group stage of the World Cup, currently taking place in the United States, Canada and Mexico, has come to an end. At the end of the day, Africa shone thanks to certain teams and players. On an individual level, four players made a real difference on this first day.

Yan Diomande: the Ivory Coast international put in an outstanding performance against Ecuador on 14 June. The 19-year-old striker caught the eye with his dribbling and runs that caused the opposition serious problems. Diomande did not score a goal, but he was the key architect of Ivory Coast’s victory over Ecuador. He was rightly named man of the match.

Vozinha: he was one of the standout names on the first day of the group stage. The 40-year-old Cape Verdean goalkeeper surprised everyone with his outstanding performance against Spain. Vozinha frustrated La Roja with his decisive saves and stops, which enabled Cape Verde to snatch a draw against Spain, one of the favourites for this World Cup. He was rightly named man of the match.

Emam Ashour: The 28-year-old Egyptian showed his goalscoring instinct against Belgium. Emam Ashour quickly put Egypt ahead right from the kick-off in the match between the Red Devils and the Pharaohs. Although Egypt conceded an equaliser at the final whistle, Emam Ashour was rewarded with the man of the match award.

Antoine Semenyo: The Ghanaian winger made the difference with his quality performance against Panama on the night of Thursday 18 June. Semenyo once again delivered a top-class performance that played a huge part in the Black Stars’ victory in their opening Group L match at the World Cup. His performance earned him the Man of the Match award at the final whistle.
