Mexican prodigy Gilberto Mora, fresh off a stunning Gold Cup win with the national team at just 16, will have to wait to make his dream move to Europe. Despite attracting interest from top clubs like Barcelona, Milan, PSG and Manchester City, FIFA regulations prohibit his transfer abroad this summer.
According to FIFA rules, international transfers are generally banned for players under 18, unless specific conditions are met — such as family relocation for non-football reasons, educational purposes, or refugee status. None of these apply to Mora.
After becoming the youngest player to win a senior international trophy, fans had hoped to see the Tijuana midfielder join Europe’s elite. But for now, he’ll remain with Xolos until at least 2027, when he turns 18 and becomes eligible for an international transfer.
The club can, however, agree on a future deal — a strategy used in the past by Real Madrid with Endrick and Chelsea with Estêvão, who is poised to finish a move to English football soon. Mora’s next steps will be on home soil, as Europe waits in the wings.
