On Friday, August 28, the fourth round of the Portuguese championship brings us a match that, at first glance, seems straightforward: Rio Ave host Sporting Lisbon. The clash will take place at the Rio Ave Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 20:15 local time.

The hosts have had a bumpy start to their campaign. In the opening round, Rio Ave fell 0-1 to Gil Vicente, then suffered a home defeat to Porto (0-2). It seemed like they were heading for a rough start, but in the third round, they delivered a crucial response — a 2-0 away victory over Estoril. So, coming into the showdown with Sporting, Rio Ave have three points from three matches and a goal difference of 2:3.

This brings us to the main question: can Roberto Fernandez’s side once again rely on a defensive approach and catch their opponents on mistakes? That plan didn’t work against Porto, but in Estoril, Rio Ave played a much more disciplined game. At home, they’ll have an extra trump card — the support of their fans.

Now let’s talk about Sporting. The Lisbon giants remain unbeaten: they opened with a 2-2 draw against Estrela Amadora, then edged Vitoria Guimaraes 3-2, and followed up with a confident 3-1 win over Alverca. Rui Borges’s side have seven points and sit second in the table after three rounds, trailing only Porto, who have a perfect record.

What’s especially notable is Sporting have already scored eight goals in the league. The main attacking star remains Luis Suarez: the Colombian found the net against Alverca and was one of the team’s driving forces last season as well. Keep a close eye on Rodrigo Salazar — the newcomer has already registered both a goal and an assist in the opening rounds.

However, Sporting do have a minor problem — their defense hasn’t looked rock-solid so far. They’ve conceded four goals in their first three matches.

Estrela managed to come back from 0-2, while Vitoria put two past the Lisbon side. So the visitors can’t afford to relax.
Still, if we put emotions aside, the difference in quality here is obvious. Sporting travel in search of another victory, fully aware that dropping points in this kind of fixture could be costly in the title race. Rio Ave, on the other hand, will likely try to stay compact, weather the early pressure, and capitalize on rare attacking chances.
I wouldn’t expect this to be an easy stroll for the visitors. But based on current form, squad quality, and attacking firepower, Sporting are clear favorites. I think the hosts can cause some problems, but the Lisbon side should take all three points.
