Fernandes fires in a hat-trick as Manchester United set new Premier League record
Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes was the star of the show in the second-round Premier League clash with Ipswich Town (5-2). The Portuguese scored his second Premier League hat-trick, with both of his three-goal hauls coming in Manchester United's first home match of a Premier League season.
Fernandes first achieved the feat in the 2021/22 season, when Manchester United hosted Leeds United. Five years later, the Portuguese repeated the achievement, once again scoring three times in the team's opening home league fixture of the new campaign — this time against Ipswich.
The captain's outstanding performance helped the Red Devils secure an important victory and gave the fans plenty of reason for optimism following their disappointing opening match.
In addition, Manchester United have set a unique Premier League record. The Red Devils have now benefited from more opposition own goals than any other team in the history of the competition. They have scored 80 such goals in total. With that figure, United have overtaken Liverpool, who previously held the record with 79 own goals in their favour.
