Fast Start, Calm Finish: Man City Outclass Wydad in Philly

Manchester City opened their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over Wydad AC at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Wednesday, thanks to an electric start and dominant control.
Fastest Goal in Tournament History
Phil Foden wasted no time making history, scoring after just 1 minute and 54 seconds, the fastest goal in Club World Cup history. The goal came after Wydad keeper Mehdi Benabid parried low cross and Foden pounced on the rebound to slot it home.
Doku Doubles the Lead Before Halftime
Foden was involved once more shortly before halftime, this time with curling corner that reached Jeremy Doku at the far post. Doku finished neatly beyond Benabid after Abdelmounaim Boutouil failed to clear his lines, giving City a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Wydad Show Spirit but Fall Short
Wydad AC, the Moroccan giants, pushed forward through Thembinkosi Lorch, who forced a sharp save from Ederson in the 32nd minute. But the Casablanca side struggled to create consistent chances and rarely tested City's defense in the second half.
A late flashpoint came when Rico Lewis received a red card for a high boot that struck Samuel Obeng, despite winning the ball cleanly. The decision sparked debate, but City remained composed to close out the game.
Foden: “New season, fresh me”
Named Player of the Match, Foden expressed delight with both his performance and the result:
“I seem to score most of my goals in and around the box. So I was just staying alive. The ball fell to me and I put it away nicely,” said the England international.
“It was difficult at times with the heat, but we managed it well. Fair play to Wydad, they gave us a good game.”
What’s Next?
Wydad AC must bounce back when they face Juventus on Sunday, still in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Manchester City will travel to Atlanta to meet Al Ain of the UAE in their second Group G fixture.
