Cosmos Return Edges Closer with Potential 2026 USL Debut in New Jersey

A legendary name in American soccer is poised for a comeback. Hudson River Blue reports that North Jersey Pro Soccer plans to revive the New York Cosmos in USL League One starting in 2026, with Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, NJ, as their home ground. Sources close to the USL suggest an official announcement could be made at a July 10 event.
It would be the third incarnation of the iconic club. The original Cosmos, famed for signing Pelé, dominated the NASL between 1970 and 1985. A second version ran from 2013 to 2020, winning multiple Soccer Bowl titles and upsetting MLS sides in the U.S. Open Cup. The new iteration might drop “New York” from the name and adopt a fresh visual identity.
Hinchliffe Stadium, a 10,000-seat National Historic Landmark, was recently renovated. Its return to hosting pro soccer is seen as a major milestone for the Tri-State soccer scene.
Leading the effort is Erik Stover, former COO of the Cosmos and now CEO of North Jersey Pro Soccer. His role in the stadium’s redevelopment since 2021 adds weight to the revival plans. Trademark filings tied to Rocco Commisso’s Cosmos entity show recent activity, including cancellation notices filed in June, suggesting a new branding path.
If confirmed, this would mark the sixth former NASL team to join the USL and the fourth to make the leap from NISA. Regardless of naming details, the return of the Cosmos —playing in a league with promotion and relegation ambitions— would be a major moment for American soccer.
