Fiorentina footballer Edoardo Bove collapsed on the field during a Serie A match last weekend and required surgery to implant a defibrillator.

Details: As announced on Fiorentina's official website, the operation was successful. Bove himself contacted the club to inform them that he is feeling very well. He will now undergo a post-operative recovery process.

What is the subcutaneous defibrillator implanted in Edoardo Bove?

Bove was fitted with a special defibrillator. As explained by Professor Massimo Mantica to Fanpage.it, it is a type of automatic implantable defibrillator known as an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator).

This device is a significant alternative to the traditional transvenous defibrillator. It detects abnormal heart rhythms and immediately corrects them with an electrical shock.

Unlike the traditional defibrillator, the subcutaneous version implanted in Bove is placed under the skin, rather than having electrodes reach the heart through veins.

The subcutaneous defibrillator also offers the advantage of being implanted through a less invasive surgical procedure, avoiding the heart and veins. Furthermore, it is easier to remove, which might be necessary after further medical evaluations of Bove's condition.

Reminder: Fiorentina's Edoardo Bove might face a ban from playing football in Italy. We have previously explained the reasons why such a decision could be made.
