Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has emphasized the significance of South Africa’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin. The former African champions will face Lesotho on Friday at Peter Mokaba Stadium before traveling to Ivory Coast to take on Benin next Tuesday.

Broos on the Importance of These Matches

“As everybody knows, we have important games in front of us. If we can achieve two victories against Lesotho and Benin, we can take a big step towards qualification. Lesotho is a team that fights for every ball, and playing against South Africa will motivate them even more,” Broos stated.

Squad Updates & Key Players

Rushwin Dortley, a defender for the Kaizer Chiefs, is sidelined, but Broos is still confident in his defensive alternatives. Siyabonga Ngezana and Grant Kekana are anticipated to form the center-back tandem.

Following his game-winning brace for Orlando Pirates against Mamelodi Sundowns, young phenom Relebohile Mofokeng is anticipated to be a major player in the forthcoming games.

Lesotho’s Fighting Spirit

Lesotho coach Leslie Notsi sees this as a golden opportunity for his team.

“We know it won’t be easy, but we’ll give it our all. These games are a chance for our players to gain international exposure and prove themselves,” Notsi said.

Group C Standings

Bafana Bafana are currently second in Group C with seven points, level with leaders Rwanda, while Lesotho sits in fourth place, just two points behind.

Head-to-Head Record

South Africa has won seven of their 13 encounters against Lesotho, with the most recent meeting ending in a 4-0 victory for Bafana in the 2021 COSAFA Cup.

Referees from Djibouti will officiate Friday’s game against Lesotho, while Mauritanian officials will handle the Benin clash in Ivory Coast.
