Bafana Bafana legend Teko Modise on Hugo Broos: The coach was afraid of taking risks as Cameroon knocks South Africa out of Africa Cup of Nations
Hugo Broos was afraid of taking risks as a coach.
Broos was not even supposed to start with eight defensive players in the Bafana line-up which is also something that showed he approached the last-16 against Cameroon with caution.
This is the view of former Bafana international Teko Modise who was scathing in his analysis of the 2-1 defeat to the Indomitable Lions.
"I just wish Hugo Broos had taken those types of risks earlier. We spoke about the risks that Bafana is supposed to have taken when Egypt was 10-men down,” Modise told SuperSport TV.
"Yet again, we are conceding two goals in the 46th and 47th minute, we are supposed to take risks because there are no opportunities to do so, and we have failed to do so.
Modise said Broos left things too late to make proper changes to his line-up.
“You played Aubrey Modiba as a wing back, now he comes back as a left back, you played Mbokazi as a left back, now he comes back as a left centre-back again. So made those changes a little bit late in the game,” he said.
"These are the lessons we should be learning: we need to take certain risks, we need to trust the players around the bench. Tshepang Moremi could have come earlier.
"That would have made a difference. Modiba came in with those crosses, and you look at the problems that Makgopa caused Cameroon. I just wish those changes were done earlier.”
