AFCON 2025: Can Senegal maintain its momentum in the final against Morocco?
Senegal has not lost a match except on penalties at the Africa Cup of Nations since 2021. But will the Lions of Teranga be able to maintain this performance on Sunday 18 January 2026 in the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco?
Since its defeat in the 2019 CAN final against Algeria, the Senegalese national team has not lost a match except on penalties. At the 2021 CAN, which saw its historic victory, the Senegalese team did not lose a single match. They beat Zimbabwe (1-0), Cape Verde (2-0), Equatorial Guinea (3-1) and Burkina Faso (1-3). They also recorded draws against Guinea (0-0) and Malawi (0-0) before defeating Egypt on penalties in the final of the competition.
At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the Lions of Teranga continued their winning streak. They were only eliminated on penalties by the host country, Côte d'Ivoire. In the group stage, Senegal beat Gambia (3-0), Cameroon (3-1) and Guinea (0-2) before being eliminated by Côte d'Ivoire in the round of 16 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Senegal still going strong at CAN 2025
In the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the team is unshakeable. Before reaching the final, which will be played on 18 January, Senegal has not lost a single match. The Lions of Teranga defeated Botswana (3-0), Benin (3-0), Sudan (3-1), Mali (0-1), drew with DR Congo (1-1) before knocking out Egypt in the semi-finals (1-0).
The Senegalese team will be able to extend this streak on the 18th or see it come to an end in the final against host country Morocco.
