At the 2024 UCI Road World Championships in Zurich, Switzerland, a tragic incident overshadowed the competition. Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer passed away in the hospital from severe injuries sustained after falling from her bike.

Details: On Thursday, September 26, Furrer was competing in a race when she suffered a serious crash. She sustained severe head injuries and was airlifted to the University Hospital in Zurich, where she tragically passed away the following day due to her injuries.

Statement: "With the passing of Muriel Furrer, the international cycling community has lost a rider with a bright future.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the organizing committee of the 2024 Road and Para-cycling World Championships extend their deepest condolences to Muriel Furrer’s family and friends, as well as to the Swiss Cycling Federation. The family of Muriel Furrer requests privacy during this incredibly difficult time," read a statement from the UCI.

"Our hearts are broken. With a heavy heart and deep sorrow, we must say goodbye to Muriel Furrer. We are losing a warm and wonderful young woman whose smile was always present. There is no understanding, only pain and sadness," Swiss Cycling also released a heartfelt message.

Context: On the day of the race, heavy rain created hazardous conditions, leading to several crashes. According to Der Spiegel, Furrer's accident occurred in a wooded area on the northern side of Lake Zurich. Bild reported that she remained out of sight from race officials for some time following the accident.

Another competitor, speaking to Blick, remarked that the descent where Furrer fell "was not particularly dangerous," with racers reaching speeds of 80-90 km/h.

Despite the tragedy, Furrer's parents, in consultation with UCI, expressed their wish for the championship races to continue. Women's and men's events are scheduled for today, September 28, and tomorrow, September 29.
