If you live in Nigeria, BetKing is a helpful and legitimate online bookmaker. If you live outside of Nigeria, it won't be much use to you at all.
For our Nigerian readers, this article will look at everything you may want to know about BetKing, and allow you to decide whether or not you wish to use them.
General information about BetKing
BetKing was founded in 2018, so compared to other gambling sites, they are still very new. However, despite not being around for so long, they must be doing something right as they have already become one of the largest gambling companies in Nigeria.
BetKing has a very limited amount of sports compared to other online betting sites. And there is a heavier focus on their affiliate programme.
However, if you're after a bookmaker based in Nigeria for Nigerians, BetKing could be for you.
License and Legality
BetKing is owned by a company called "Gaming Limited T/A BetKing", which is licensed in Nigeria, with the licence number "RC 1419108".
Therefore, they are a legitimate, fully licensed company. They wouldn't have gotten as big as they have in such a short time if they weren't.
Minimum and maximum rates
BetKing does not allow you to play in US dollars, British Pounds, or Euros. The only currency you can play in is the Nigerian naira. So, for the rest of this article, ₦ will be the only currency symbol we'll use.
The minimum amount you can stake on a single bet is ₦100. And, there is no maximum - you can bet as much as you want.
A small minimum makes it a good website for people who are just gambling for fun and don't want to risk too much money.
Most of the reviews we could find were review articles - where a thousand or so words were dedicated to talking about BetKing. And generally speaking, they were mostly positive.
Many reviews mentioned that BetKing would often have good bonuses and odds.
However, the legitimacy of these reviews is hard to verify. For all we know, they could have been paid for.
How we evaluated the bookmaker
BetKing is undoubtedly not awful and definitely legitimate.
Our main criticisms are that there are fewer sports than on other websites, there is no casino or slots, and a heavy focus on the affiliate programme.
But overall, they certainly aren't terrible.
Pros and cons
To help you better understand whether or not you want to use BetKing, here is a quick list of some of their pros and cons.
- The website is easy to navigate and use.
- The staff are always accommodating.
- Live scores can be easily viewed.
- There is lots of information if you get confused or don't know how to use the website.
- They display most football matches (even semi-professional teams).
- A limited number of sports.
- Much more affiliate focused than other online bookmakers.
- You cannot pay directly with your credit or debit card.
- Some deposit methods charge a bank fee.
- There is no casino, slots, or tote.
Did you know that no online bookmaker uses the official odds? Think of it this way. Say there was a 20% chance of Reds winning and an 80% chance of blues winning.
I could bet ₦200 on reds, and ₦800 on blues, and end up not letting the bookmaker make a profit. So, bookmakers will manipulate the odds to increase the chances of profit.
Let's look at BetKing's marginality to see whether it's fair.
The first sport we looked at was high-level football; by looking at 3 games, we found an average marginality of 4%. The games we looked at were "Southampton vs Manchester United", "Brentford vs Everton" and "Brighton vs Leeds".
Next, we wanted to see if changing the level would change the marginality. We looked at lower-level football (the semi-professional teams). And the average margin was 6%. It makes sense that the margin is higher- fewer people are betting on it!
The games we looked at were "Mickleover Sports vs St Ives", "Kings Langley vs Stratford Town", and "Redditch United vs Nuneaton".
Leaving football, we next looked at esports. Some would say esports aren't real sports. But, people bet on them. The average margin for e-sports was 9%.
We looked at the odds of "1win vs SAW", "Forze vs 9ine", and "Natus Vincere vs Team Spirit".
The next sport was tennis, which had an average margin of 5%. We looked at "Cerundolo vs Murray", "Halys vs Rinderknech", and "Millman vs Nava".
Now, usually, we would look at the average marginality for horse racing. But, BetKing didn't have horse racing as an option. We wanted a sport with multiple participants, one winner, and no draws.
The only cycling event on BetKing was "La Vuelta a España". And it has a whopping margin! We couldn't quite believe it. According to our maths, the marginality for cycling was 275%.
Did we do the maths wrong? Did we misread the odds? We're not sure.
Because (like most online bookmakers), BetKing doesn't publish its margins, we had to do the maths ourselves. Therefore, figuring out an average margin for the whole website would be nearly impossible.
However, we can make an estimate based on the maths we've already done.
Let's take an average of all the average margins in the previous section. We get 59.8%- this is incredibly high because of how high the margin was in cycling.
But, if we do an average that excludes cycling, we get a far more reasonable 6%.
The financial operations on BetKing work slightly differently from other websites. Particularly the deposits.
Different deposit methods have different minimums and maximums, and some even have transaction fees. The following sections will give you an insight into how to add money to your BetKing account.
If you wish to pay with PayStack, all you need to do is select "Deposit Now" on the top right of BetKing, and decide how much money you wish to add.
But, BetKing also allows you to add money via the following transfer methods. GTB, QuickTeller ATM, Zenith Bank, Polaris Collect, Interswitch, Webpay, Paydirect, Quickteller web, UBA, and Opay.
If you wish to make a deposit with any of these methods, you need to go to BetKing's "Help" section and look for "Deposits" on the side menu. Then, select the way you want to use to read instructions.
I know this might sound complicated, but this website is for Nigerians who may not have access to online banking as we do in the USA or UK.
Like deposits, withdrawals also work slightly differently on BetKing than on other websites.
Usually, we recommend people withdraw using the same method they used to deposit, but we cannot do that here. Why? Because BetKing only allows you to withdraw into your bank account.
To make a withdrawal, you will need to withdraw a minimum of ₦100 and a maximum of ₦10,000,000.
- Select "My Account" in the top right of BetKing.
- Select "Account Settings", "Withdraw", and "Withdraw Now".
- Type in the amount you wish to withdraw.
- Enter your bank details.
- Select "Proceed".
Once you've submitted your bank details, next time you want to withdraw, just click on the little person symbol (with the words "Shop" next to it), and pick "Withdrawal" from the side menu.
However, one thing BetKing has in common with most other online bookmakers is that they don't take a commission. If you win it, you keep it.
However, they do have an affiliate programme. And the focus on the affiliate programme is much stronger than we've seen on other bookmakers.
Most bookmakers will briefly mention their affiliate scheme at the bottom of their website. However, BetKing puts it on its top menu, where customers are far more likely to see it.
Affiliates must pass a share of their profits onto BetKing (usually around 20-30%). Whether this commission is passed to the customer is up to the individual affiliates.
Tax on winnings
Usually, in this section, we would say, "Whether your bet winnings are taxed is up to your government, not the bookmaker".
But, we don't need to say that in this case because the only country you can play BetKing in is Nigeria. And the Nigerian government does not tax bet winnings.
Therefore, nobody who plays BetKing needs to pay tax on what they win.
There are several bonus offers and special deals with BetKing.
The first one we ought to mention is their "100% welcome bonus". All you need to do to get it is add a ₦100 (minimum) deposit to your account.
Then go to My Account, Bonus, Inactive Bonus, Activate. Afterwards, you'll need to verify your bank account, and then you'll be able to claim the bonus. We should note that you cannot get a higher amount than ₦100,000 as your welcome bonus.
If you want to win extra money, you can also participate in the "Fantasy Mix". Let's say one day there are two matches, "Manchester United vs Portsmouth" and "Arsenal vs Chelsea".
Betking will put on a fantasy game, "Manchester United vs Chelsea", and use the goals scored in the actual matches to predict the score of the made-up game.
BetKing also has a 225% accumulator bonus. You can win up to 225% of what you put into an accumulator bet.
The in-play cash-out allows you to withdraw before the game finishes, so you don't lose as much money as you would otherwise.
And they also put on a lottery where you can win a DStv kit and sports jerseys.
Application and mobile version of the bookmaker
Currently, BetKing does not have a mobile application. However, by going to m.betking.com, you can view a mobile-friendly version of their website.
To play on BetKing, you will need a device with access to an internet browser. This could be a phone, laptop, computer, etc.
If you can use chrome, internet explorer, firefox, or anything that lets you browse the web, you can use BetKing.
Comparison of the mobile version of the site with the application
m.betking.com and betking.com are almost identical. They have the same functions and options. The only difference is how they look.
m.betking.com is designed for mobile devices, whereas betking.com is intended for regular computers and laptops.
The top menu is where you can navigate your way throughout the site. Here is what you can expect to find on it.
- Sports. Where you can find the sports and games you want to bet on. Whether you have a team you want to win, or you just want to see who's playing who.
- Live. See who's playing right now; check the score. You can even place bets on matches which are still in play.
- Virtual. If you're interested in e-sports, the "virtual" section is where you can find live and upcoming games.
- Become an agent. If you wish to join their affiliate scheme, this section will give you all the information you'd want to know.
- Blog. Read about the latest events, opinions, upcoming bonuses, and other topics BetKing has written about.
- Help. Struggling to add money to your account? The help section is filled with helpful information about how to use BetKing.
- Live Chat. If you're still stuck or have a technical issue, use the live chat to talk to a real person.
On the homepage, you'll find the most popular games that people are betting on. These are the games customers are most likely to place their money on, hence why they're so easy to find. If you'd rather bet on your team, finding them is just a search away.
On the side of the homepage, you'll find an A-Z of sports. As mentioned, there aren't as many sports as on other websites, but there are still a few.
Also, you can find social media information about BetKing in the top menu.
Features of the site functionality
As the name suggests, BetKing's primary function is to allow its customers to place bets on sporting events.
They just need to find the sport they want, select the match, and place their bet.
But of course, betking.com also allows you to add a deposit into your account or withdraw it. You can also edit your profile details. And, if you need help, click the "help" section to find all the information about using BetKing.
Above the top menu, you'll see the time and a settings icon. Click the settings icon to alter how the odds are displayed.
Unlike most other online bookmakers, BetKing does not have a casino.
There are no tabletop games (live or otherwise) and no slot machines. The only thing you can bet on is sports.
Yes, BetKing has live matches.
Select "Live" from the top menu to view matches that are happening right now. Once you've selected a live game, you can see plenty of information, such as the score, who has the ball, and what the referee has determined.
Unfortunately, BetKing does not broadcast matches. Whilst you can see the information, you cannot see the players play.
Unlike most other online bookmakers, BetKing does not do "Tote betting". This is where the money you could win comes from other participants in the scheme instead of the bookmaker.
But, BetKing doesn't have this option.
If you like what you've read and want to try BetKing, you'll first need to register for an account.
You'll see a large turquoise "Join Now" sign on the homepage.
The first piece of information they want is your phone number. And it has to be a Nigerian phone number.
On the next page, you'll need to give further details, such as your email address, name and password.
Before creating your account, you will need to verify your phone number. BetKing will text you a verification code.
The verification process on BetKing is more robust than we've seen on many other websites.
In addition to verifying your phone number, BetKing also requires "KYC" (know your customer) verification before you can withdraw any money. This means no ID, no money.
To complete KYC verification You'll have to send a copy of your voter's card, passport, national ID document, driver's licence, or CAC document. Whichever document you send, it needs to clearly display your name, date of birth, and the document's expiry date.
Usually, your ID will be reviewed within a few hours.
You can top up or withdraw from your account in the personal area.
You can also edit your details, so if you change your phone number or email address, BetKing can still get in touch with you if they need to.
You can also view your history, both bets and transactions. This could help you decide if you should stop betting for a while or if it's been long enough to justify another gamble.
BetKing has similar rules to most other bookmakers.
The first and most enforced rule is that you must be 18 years old to use the service. If they suspect you may be under 18, they can stop your account.
BetKing has the right to stop your account anytime, for any reason. They are within their rights to block your account if they suspect fraud or other criminal activity.
You can read more about their terms and conditions in the "help" section. So long as you play by the rules, you have nothing to worry about.
Safety and reliability
BetKing is a legitimate website, as their licensing seems to be in order. This is definitely not some scammer in his mom's basement.
The payment methods they allow also appear safe and secure. Some of them even require bank authorisation. And their verification process is stronger than on other online betting sites.
Our only criticism here is that there doesn't seem to be any information about gambling addiction- how to avoid it and what to do if you develop it.
If you're having issues, you can speak to a team member via BetKing's live chat. Alternatively, you can also email [email protected]
Unfortunately, BetKing does not have a phone number you can call.
Social activities (Sponsorship)
Unlike other online bookmakers, BetKing has a longer list of sponsorships. Let's take a look at some of them here.
- Joshua vs Usyk. A boxing match that happened in August 2022. The match took place in Saudi Arabia.
- NNN. A newspaper in Nigeria that supplies news, sports, and other important information for Nigerians.
- NStv competition. BetKing sponsors a competition that NsTV runs, where the winner will get a free NsTV kit.
- BetKing is currently in talks with the Ghana premier league. Although nothing has been confirmed yet.
- AFN/MOC Grand Prix. A running race in Nigeria.
- Aba Fashion week. Nigeria's biggest fashion show.
In conclusion, BetKing is a legitimate and fun website, which is excellent for people in Nigeria. It has limited sports and no casino, so it's not quite as advanced as other betting sites.
However, if you live in Nigeria and want to place a bet on your favourite football team, BetKing makes it simple and easy.
