Norwich — Portsmouth: it is time for the hosts to end their slump
On October 17, Norwich will host Portsmouth at Carrow Road in the 11th round of the English Championship. Both teams head into the clash on the back of defeats, making the margin for error especially small. For the hosts, this is a chance to halt their slide, while the visitors will be desperate to finally turn promising spells of play into a consistent result.
Norwich: the attack is firing, but the defence is letting them down
Philippe Clement's side have yet to live up to their fans' expectations. Early in the season, the Canaries defeated Burnley 4-1 and Sheffield United 3-1, but their results have since taken a noticeable turn for the worse. Defeats to Middlesbrough (3-4) and Bolton (3-4) exposed just how vulnerable the hosts' defence can be, while Norwich most recently lost 1-2 to Swansea.

At the same time, the team's attacking potential has not disappeared. Norwich are capable of creating chances, moving the ball quickly into the box and punishing opponents for leaving space. The problem is that they have to score heavily to compensate for mistakes at the other end.
At home, the hosts will surely look to take control and impose a high tempo from the opening whistle. However, if they once again lose concentration when the opposition transition into attack, the match could turn into another frantic shootout.
Portsmouth: a derby response is needed
Simon Bassey's men are also going through a difficult spell. In the previous round, Portsmouth lost 0-1 to Southampton in a fiercely contested South Coast derby. The team were handed a chance to fight back after the opposition were reduced to ten men, but they failed to convert their opportunities.
Before that, Pompey drew 2-2 with Blackburn and 0-0 with Charlton, while also defeating Cardiff 2-0. The results show that the side are capable of competing, but they are still lacking consistency in attack.
The visitors must prevent Norwich from building momentum with quick combinations. If they can withstand the early pressure and exploit the spaces, Portsmouth will have a chance to take points back to the south coast.
What can we expect from the match?
The head-to-head record points to a closely fought contest: in April 2026, the teams played out a 1-1 draw. Much will depend on which side handles the pressure better and manages to exploit the opponent's weaknesses.
Norwich look more dangerous in attack, especially on home turf, but their defensive problems give Portsmouth genuine hope. The visitors should not sit back for the entire match: if they do, the hosts could gradually pin them back in their own half.
Prediction: both teams to score — yes.
