Can Roma turn class into a convincing win? Roma vs Slovan Bratislava prediction – 20.10.2026
Roma host Slovan Bratislava at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday, October 20, in Matchday 3 of the Champions League league phase. Gian Piero Gasperini's side have only one point after a 1-1 draw at Fenerbahçe and a dramatic 3-4 defeat to Real Madrid, while Slovan arrive in Rome without a point after heavy losses to PSG and Stuttgart.

Roma: performances now need to become points
Roma's Champions League results do not fully reflect the level of their performances. They controlled long spells of the opening draw in Istanbul and then produced an excellent attacking display against Real Madrid, leading 3-1 before collapsing late and losing 4-3. Donyell Malen scored twice against the Spanish giants, while Marten de Roon also found the net.
The response to that defeat was important. Roma beat Genoa 2-0 at the Olimpico, with Santiago Castro and Emanuele Lulli scoring in the second half. That result also showed Gasperini has alternatives beyond his usual attacking leaders, which is particularly valuable during a demanding period with several absentees.
Roma have scored four times in their opening two Champions League matches and average 54% possession with a 90% passing accuracy. Against Slovan, the hosts should be able to dominate territory and possession much more comfortably than they did against Real Madrid.
Slovan Bratislava: a derby boost, but Europe has exposed the gap
Slovan received a major confidence boost at the weekend by beating Spartak Trnava 3-0 away from home. Rahim Ibrahim scored twice and Yaya Touré's team produced a disciplined performance just three days after their European defeat to Stuttgart.
The Champions League, however, has been a completely different challenge. Slovan opened their league phase with a 6-1 defeat at PSG before losing 3-0 at home to Stuttgart. That leaves the Slovak champions with zero points, one goal scored and nine conceded after two rounds. Against Stuttgart they had just 36% possession and only one shot on target.
Touré has built a team that can be dangerous in transition through Tigran Barseghyan, Suleiman Camara and Andraž Šporar, but defending for long periods against technically superior opposition remains the major problem. Slovan can compete domestically through intensity and experience, yet Roma should force them much deeper than Trnava did.
Team news
Roma will again be without first-choice goalkeeper Mile Svilar, who is recovering from a stress fracture in his finger. Manu Koné suffered a first-degree muscle injury against Real Madrid, while Bryan Cristante is not expected back yet. Paulo Dybala has been dealing with calf fatigue and remains the main fitness question. Malen's absence against Genoa was due to a domestic suspension, so he remains an option in the Champions League.
For Slovan, Dominik Takáč remains the established goalkeeper, with César Blackman, Kenan Bajrić, Svetozar Marković and Sandro Cruz forming the defensive unit that started against Stuttgart. Peter Pokorný and Alen Mustafić provide protection in midfield, while Barseghyan, Cristian Martínez, Suleiman Camara and Šporar are among Touré's main attacking options in Europe.
Match facts and key trends

- Slovan have conceded nine goals in two Champions League games.
- Slovan lost 1-6 to PSG and 0-3 to Stuttgart in the league phase.

Roma should turn their superiority into a comfortable win
Slovan's 3-0 derby victory deserves respect, but the difference between their domestic opposition and the level they have faced in the Champions League has been enormous. PSG scored six against them, while Stuttgart created eight shots on target and left Bratislava with a comfortable three-goal victory.
Roma also have weaknesses, especially with Svilar, Koné and Cristante unavailable and Dybala not guaranteed to be at full fitness. But Gasperini still has Malen, Soulé, Castro, Rodrigo Mora and dangerous wing-backs capable of constantly stretching Slovan's defensive block.
The hosts urgently need their first Champions League victory and should play aggressively from the opening stages. Slovan may survive for stretches through a compact defensive shape, but over 90 minutes Roma's technical quality, depth and home advantage should create enough pressure for a multi-goal victory. The Asian line offers considerably more value than backing the heavily favored hosts simply to win.
Prediction: Roma Asian handicap (-2).
