Can Pompey’s resilience survive another test at Molineux? Wolverhampton vs Portsmouth prediction – 20.10.2026
Wolverhampton Wanderers and Portsmouth will finally play their rearranged Championship fixture on Tuesday, October 20, at Molineux. The match was twice moved from its original September slot and now arrives at an interesting moment: Wolves have 17 points from ten matches, while Pompey are only three points behind after their victory at Norwich.

Wolverhampton: Burnley win stopped the slide, but attacking problems remain
Cesar Peixoto badly needed a response after successive defeats to Middlesbrough and Bolton. Wolves lost 1-0 at the Riverside and then suffered their first home league defeat of the season, going down 3-1 against Bolton despite having enough opportunities to make the contest much closer.
They finally reacted at Turf Moor. Wolves fell behind against Burnley, but Fer López equalised shortly before the break and substitute Tawanda Chirewa scored the winner just 21 seconds after coming onto the pitch. The 2-1 victory was more about resilience than domination, with Burnley producing 11 attempts before Wolves even registered their first shot on target.
Peixoto, however, still has important personnel problems in attack. Raúl Jiménez requires surgery on his left MCL and is expected to remain sidelined until January. Adam Armstrong missed the Burnley game with a back problem, Rodrigo Gomes was unavailable with an ankle issue, while Bertrand Traoré and Boubacar Traoré have also been in the treatment room.
That lack of attacking depth was visible at Burnley, where young Sean Neave started up front. Wolves still have plenty of quality behind the striker — Fer López, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, Mateus Mané and Rafiki Saïd all offer different solutions — but Peixoto has been forced to rotate heavily during this demanding Championship schedule.
Portsmouth: two wins in a row despite a serious injury crisis
John Mousinho’s side arrive at Molineux with confidence. Portsmouth responded to a frustrating 1-0 south-coast derby defeat against ten-man Southampton by beating Sheffield United 3-2 and then grinding out a 1-0 victory away to Norwich. Marko Milovanović converted the decisive penalty at Carrow Road, meaning Pompey have collected six points from nine since the international break.
The Norwich performance was particularly revealing. Portsmouth were patient with the ball in the first half and, once ahead, survived a strong spell of home pressure to protect their lead. Mousinho named the same starting eleven that had beaten Sheffield United, suggesting he has found a functioning structure despite having very limited options on the bench.
The injury list remains a major concern. Keshi Anderson suffered another setback against Sheffield United, John Swift is expected to miss several weeks with a knee injury and Josh Murphy is not expected back until after the Millwall fixture. Conor Shaughnessy, Connor Ogilvie, Franco Umeh, Thomas Waddingham, Benjy Arthur and Luke Brooke-Smith have also been among the absentees.
Despite that, Portsmouth have shown they can make matches uncomfortable away from home. Their last two Championship trips produced just two goals in total: a 1-0 defeat at Southampton followed by the 1-0 victory at Norwich.
Possible lineups
- Wolverhampton: Sá, Tchatchoua, Djiga, Toti, Konan, André, Munetsi, López, Bellegarde, Saïd, Neave.
- Portsmouth: Schmid, Swanson, Poole, Dia, Meghoma, Pack, Mohamed, Kamara, Segečić, Kavuma-McQueen, Milovanović.
Key facts
- Wolves have 17 points from ten Championship matches, scoring 18 goals and conceding 15.
- Portsmouth have 14 points from ten matches and a balanced 13:13 goal difference.
- Wolves have conceded in each of their last three league fixtures.
- Portsmouth have won their last two matches after losing the south-coast derby.
- Pompey’s last two away Championship games have both finished 1-0.
Wolves should control the game, but Pompey can keep it compact
Wolverhampton possess greater individual quality and playing at Molineux gives Peixoto’s side another advantage, but this does not look like an ideal situation for expecting an open contest. Wolves are missing Jiménez and could again be without Armstrong, while the recent schedule has already forced Peixoto into significant rotation.
Portsmouth are also depleted, yet Mousinho has found a relatively stable starting eleven and his team have just produced a disciplined clean sheet at Norwich. With Pompey likely to defend in a compact block and Wolves lacking their usual options through the middle, the hosts may have to remain patient for long periods.
A Wolves victory is certainly possible, but the more attractive scenario is a match in which clear chances are limited and neither side is able to turn it into an end-to-end contest.
Prediction: Under 2.5 goals.
