Al Ittihad vs Wadi Degla prediction: can the hosts finally beat their visitors?
Al-Ittihad
Wadi Degla
The new edition of the Egyptian League Cup kicks off on October 8, with the tournament being held under the name Capital Cup this season. In the opening round, Al Ittihad will host Wadi Degla. The match will take place in Alexandria, with kickoff scheduled for 17:00 local time. The teams have been drawn into Group 1, alongside Zamalek, ZED, Bank Al Ahly and Tala'ea El Gaish.
Al Ittihad head into the tournament in decent spirits. After five league rounds, the team have picked up seven points. Their campaign began cautiously with a goalless draw against Zamalek, followed by a 3-1 defeat to Ceramica. The Alexandrian side then produced a run of three straight victories. First, they defeated Abu Qir Semad and Asyut Petroleum by 2-0 and 1-0 respectively, before beating Al Masry 2-0 away from home.
Head coach Hamza El Gamal used the international break to prepare for the Cup. Al Ittihad played several friendly matches, including games against Abu Qir Semad and Kuwaiti side Al Burqan. The coach also gave his players 48 hours off after the series of friendlies was completed, ensuring the team would approach the competitive fixture in optimal condition.
Wadi Degla are in a similar position in the league. After five rounds, they also have seven points. Their start, however, has been more eventful: a 1-1 draw with ZED, a 3-1 win over Sharqia, a goalless draw against Canal, a 2-1 defeat to Modern Sport and a 2-0 victory over Al Mokawloon. The team have alternated between different results so far, but they have already shown that they can play both on the front foot and on the counterattack.
Interestingly, the teams' most recent meeting in the League Cup took place in January 2026 and ended goalless. In general, Al Ittihad's matches in this competition have often produced cautious football — in the previous edition, the team drew with Smouha, ZED and Haras El Hodoud.
That is why we should not expect a frantic tempo from the opening minutes of the first round of the Capital Cup. Both teams know the cost of a mistake, while the group format leaves enough time to recover from a setback. Al Ittihad will enjoy home advantage, while Wadi Degla are likely to keep things compact and wait for their opportunity. It is quite possible that the opening goal will prove to be the decisive moment of the entire match.
My prediction: both teams to score — yes.
