The Leopards want to give the Democratic Republic of the Congo the place it deserves on the international football stage.

The DR Congo kick off their World Cup campaign this Wednesday, 17 June. With just a few hours to go before kick-off in this match against Portugal, Yaone Wissa spoke about the Congolese team’s ambitions.

For the Newcastle United striker, this World Cup campaign represents much more than just a competition. He is well aware of the challenge that lies ahead for his team. But Wissa made no secret of his admiration for the Portuguese side, which he considers to be one of the best nations in world football. Nevertheless, he refuses to approach this match with an inferiority complex.

“This is an opportunity for us to restore the country to the position it deserves. Portugal are one of the best teams in the world. We’ll be under a bit of pressure – that’s normal – but we must stay positive. They’re a better team than us, but we’re going to look them straight in the eye.”
