World champion asks Trump for help as ex-Spain star denied entry to US before World Cup final
An unexpected twist unfolded on the eve of the World Cup final. 2010 World Cup winner with the Spanish national team Joan Capdevila will not be able to travel to the US after being denied entry under the ESTA program, reports The Mirror.
In desperation, Capdevila made a public plea for assistance to US President Donald Trump. In his message on social media, the Spaniard wrote that he could not believe he would have to miss such a significant event and the chance to reunite with his former national team teammates. The former footballer also tagged US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in his post, hoping the situation could be resolved before the decisive match kicks off.
According to Capdevila himself, the refusal may have stemmed from his trip to Iran ten years ago. In 2016, the former defender took part in an exhibition match between a team of La Liga legends and an Iran All-Star squad, held in Tehran. This visit is believed to have become an obstacle in obtaining clearance to enter the US.
