The third-place play-off of the 2026 World Cup between France and England will take place in the early hours of July 19 at the Miami arena. Both teams are still reeling from their semi-final defeats: France fell to Spain 0-2, while England squandered their lead against Argentina, losing 1-2. Here’s a prediction for this match with solid chances for success.

France: more space and a chance for redemption

Up until the semi-finals, Didier Deschamps’ squad looked like one of the main contenders for the title. In the knockout rounds, France took down Sweden 3-0, Paraguay 1-0, and Morocco 1-0, but against Spain’s organized system, they struggled to find open spaces and fell short in all key metrics: 0.31 to 1.63 on xG, 0-3 in big chances, and a 0-2 final score.

England is unlikely to offer such structured pressing, so Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, and Michael Olise should find more room to operate. France is especially dangerous after the break: eight of their 16 tournament goals have come after the 65th minute, and Mbappé has extra motivation as he chases the Golden Boot.

The main loss for France was William Saliba, who suffered a serious injury in the semi-final. The defender will be out for five to six months, and Maxence Lacroix is the likely replacement. Brice Samba is also unavailable after picking up an injury following the Spain match.

England: a tough defeat and minimal recovery time

England edged past DR Congo 2-1, Mexico 3-2, and Norway 2-1, then struck first in their semi-final against Argentina. However, after Anthony Gordon’s goal, Thomas Tuchel’s side dropped too deep, lost control, and allowed their opponents to turn the match around.

Bouncing back psychologically from such a defeat won’t be easy. Tuchel himself admitted that it’s hard for players on both sides to get motivated for the bronze-medal match, but England look the more fatigued side: they’ve covered around 19,700 kilometers during the tournament, played Mexico at altitude, have another long flight ahead to Miami, and played their semi-final a day later than France.

Reece James has been injured again and won’t play any further part in the tournament. He could be replaced by Jarell Quansah, who returns after a two-match suspension. Jordan Henderson remains sidelined with a fracture.

Probable line-ups

  • France: Maignan, Digne, Lacroix, Upamecano, Koundé, Tchouaméni, Rabiot, Doué, Olise, Dembélé, Mbappé.
  • England: Pickford, Quansah, Stones, Guehi, Spence, Rice, Anderson, Rogers, Bellingham, Gordon, Kane.

Match facts and head-to-head

  • In five of France’s last six matches, fewer than four goals were scored.
  • The same total was recorded in five of England’s previous six games.
  • France have won four of their last six meetings against England.

France to step up after the break: prediction for France vs England

The defeat to Spain was painful, but it was due not only to France’s lackluster play but also to the opponent’s challenging style. England are less organized off the ball and, especially with fatigue setting in, are likely to allow the French attack much more space.

Tuchel’s side spent a lot of energy in the knockouts, played their semi-final later, and have struggled to recover emotionally. France will also rotate their squad, but appear fresher, boast a more versatile attack, and have extra motivation thanks to Mbappé’s race for the top scorer award.
