Why Eric Chelle Dropped Okoye, Moffi, and Arokodare From Nigeria’s AFCON Squad

Reports have confirmed Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle’s decision to leave out several notable names from Nigeria’s final 28-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Among the high-profile absentees are goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and forward Terem Moffi, a move that has generated widespread debate among fans and analysts.

According to OwnGoalNigeria.com, a source within Chelle’s backroom staff disclosed that Maduka Okoye was dropped due to his position on team selection. The goalkeeper reportedly stated that he would only be available for the tournament if he was assured of being the first-choice option. With Chelle keen on maintaining healthy competition within the squad, the coaching staff decided to move on without him.

Terem Moffi’s absence from the squad was also a carefully considered decision. Reports indicate that the striker’s mental state raised concerns ahead of the tournament. Moffi is said to have been affected by recent incidents involving supporters of his French club, including an attack at the team’s training ground, prompting the technical crew to question his readiness for the pressure of AFCON.

Tolu Arokodare was another notable name left out, with his omission linked to limited game time and underwhelming performances at Wolverhampton Wanderers. The coaching staff reportedly felt he has not had enough competitive action to justify a place in the squad at this time.

Instead, Chelle has turned to Paul Onuachu, whose experience and current form made him a more appealing option. The Trabzonspor striker is enjoying a prolific spell in Turkey and is currently the club’s leading goal scorer, a factor that worked heavily in his favour.
