Voting results! Barcelona name their captain for the new season
Barcelona have decided on their captains for the new season. According to Mundo Deportivo, the final decision was made following a vote in the dressing room.
Before the transfer window closed, head coach Hansi Flick identified three candidates for the captaincy — Raphinha, Pedri and Eric García. The German coach also announced that the players would hold a special vote in September to determine the remaining captains.
Flick ultimately decided to give the first two roles to Raphinha and Pedri. The Brazilian will be Barcelona’s main captain, while the Spanish midfielder will serve as his first deputy.
The remaining three positions were decided by the players themselves. Following the vote, Eric García, Frenkie de Jong and Lamine Yamal were named among the captains. The choice came as no surprise: García had previously been considered for one of the two main roles, de Jong has already worn the captain’s armband, while Yamal is one of the team’s biggest stars.
Barcelona have made a strong start to the new season, winning all three of their matches and scoring 12 goals. Raphinha has already found the net five times and provided one assist.
The Catalan side’s next match will be against Valencia on 6 September.
