Victor Osimhen Apologises to Nigerians, Promises Strong Super Eagles Response at AFCON
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has issued a heartfelt apology to Nigerians following the national team’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, while assuring fans that the squad is fully focused on delivering a strong performance at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Galatasaray forward spoke ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 group-stage clash against Tanzania, scheduled to take place in Fès on Tuesday. Osimhen’s comments were shared on Sunday by CAF-accredited photojournalist Pooja via X (formerly Twitter).
Addressing the expectations surrounding the Super Eagles, Osimhen acknowledged the pressure from fans but insisted the team remains calm and confident.
“The expectation is really high, not just within the camp but also from the Super Eagles fans all over the world,” Osimhen said. “Even with these high expectations, there is no pressure among my teammates, myself, or the coach because we understand the quality we have in this team.”
The Nigerian striker also described the Africa Cup of Nations as a crucial opportunity for redemption after the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup.
“This AFCON is an opportunity for us to try to right our wrongs,” he added. “We want to make Super Eagles fans all over the world believe that there is still so much more we can give.”
