In the final match of the Round of 16 of the 2024 European Championship, Austria played against Turkey. The game took place in Leipzig on Tuesday, July 2.
The match started spectacularly, even historically. Turkey scored in the 58th second, marking the fastest goal in Euro playoff history, courtesy of Demiral. Despite Turkey's lesser possession, they prevented Austria from creating any truly dangerous opportunities. Although Turkey themselves failed to score again, the first half ended with Turkey holding a narrow 1-0 lead.
After the break, Turkey struck quickly once more. Not as fast as in the first half, but still promptly. In the 59th minute, Merih Demiral scored again from a corner, making it 2-0. Austria then intensified their efforts, managing to reignite the contest. In the 66th minute, Michael Gregoritsch reduced the deficit to one goal, making it 1-2.
Austria continued to pressurize Turkey's goal, but the Turks defended well and prevented any equalizing opportunities.
Turkey held on to secure a narrow 2-1 victory, advancing to the quarter-finals of the European Championship, where they will face the Netherlands. The match will take place on Saturday, July 6, at the stadium in Berlin.
