The NBA is planning expansion. They set their sights on Europe and the creation of a new tournament
The NBA's ambitions extend beyond the North American continent as they plan to expand their presence. Commissioner Adam Silver announced that the NBA intends to negotiate with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to enhance their presence in Europe. They are considering options such as an annual tournament or even a league managed by the NBA. This initiative has been under consideration for several decades but has gained momentum recently due to new NBA media rights agreements for the 2025/26 season.
"We certainly haven't made any final decisions. I continue to believe there are enormous opportunities here [in Europe]. It's not something where we will transform the league structure in the short term. But I think our team owners have an appetite for additional investments in global basketball," Silver said during a conversation with the Associated Press.
"We have a huge initiative in China. We have a huge initiative in Africa. Given the quality of basketball here in Europe, it seems logical that we should do something here as well."
Although discussions about the NBA's entry into Europe have become more frequent lately, it seems unlikely that this plan will come to fruition in the near future.
