The Maradona case may start from scratch as judge withdraws under pressure

One of the most high-profile trials in Argentina is the investigation into the death of Diego Maradona. The case is so sensational that one of the judges has stepped down under pressure.
Details: 47-year-old Julieta Makintach came under scrutiny after it emerged that video recordings of the proceedings had surfaced, despite a strict prohibition. Soon after, the media revealed that Makintach had given interviews for a documentary focusing on the trial and her role in it.
Under pressure, she withdrew from the case, although the film's director insisted the documentary was solely about Makintach's work—her role as a judge and as a woman—without touching on the specifics of the proceedings. Now, among Argentine lawyers, there is a prevailing opinion that the case may need to start over with a new panel of judges. This could happen in the coming months.
Reminder: During the legal proceedings, seven members of the medical team that cared for the legendary Argentine footballer were charged with negligent homicide, which allegedly contributed to Maradona's death on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60.
