After Senegal’s friendly against the Comoros, played on 4 October at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille, the Lions of Teranga head coach took a journalist to task for using the term ‘has-been’ to describe two key players in the national team.

Patrick Vieira felt that journalists had a responsibility in their choice of words, even if such language is commonly used elsewhere. He also highlighted the two players’ performance during the match against the Comoros.

“That's disrespectful.

“You shouldn’t repeat it, just because that’s what’s being said elsewhere. You’re talking about two players who have scored goals and who are making history for Senegal.

“You can’t use that sort of language. Even if people use them elsewhere, you, the journalists, have a duty to stop using that term.

“We saw the match they played today, and yet you’re treating them as has-beens. It’s unacceptable to use such terms.

“I will not tolerate this question or this lack of respect. They are exemplary players, both on and off the pitch.”
