“It’s a stance I’ve taken”: Pape Gueye reflects on his decision to put his international career on hold
Two months after announcing his temporary retirement from the Senegal national team, the Senegalese midfielder was asked about this decision at a press conference.
Following Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Pape Gueye had announced that he would not continue his time with the Lions of Teranga whilst the former coaching staff remained in place. When asked about this decision at a press conference ahead of Senegal’s friendly against the Comoros, the player did not wish to dwell on the subject.
He now prefers to focus on working with the new coaching staff. However, the midfielder has not ruled out discussing this decision in more detail in the future.
“It’s a stance I’ve taken, one I was prepared to stand by, and I’m happy to be here. I’ll do my best to help this team; that’s the most important thing.
Perhaps there’ll be a chance to talk about it, but that’s not the most important thing today. We’ve got a new coaching staff here; we’re working well and everyone’s listening in training.”
