The Surinamese Football Association (SVB) has taken another major step in its ongoing efforts to strengthen the national team by tapping into its diaspora talent pool. As Nieuws reported, the federation has officially initiated the process for eight European-based players to acquire eligibility and represent Suriname at the senior level.
The names on the list include Jean-Paul Boëtius (SV Darmstadt), Jay-Roy Grot (Odense), Nigel Lonwijk (Huddersfield Town), Tayrell Wouter (Apollon Limassol), Marcelencio Esajas (TOP Oss), Yannick Leliendal (Volendam), Shiloh ’t Zand (Feyenoord), and Devon Koswal (SC Telstar). Among them, Leliendal’s case is reportedly the most advanced, as the 22-year-old defender has already played youth internationals for both the Netherlands and Belgium and is currently a standout at FC Volendam.
The initiative, part of a broader recruitment strategy led by head coach Stanley Menzo, aims to elevate the competitive level of “Natio” by integrating high-potential players with Surinamese heritage. The SVB is specifically targeting dual nationals in the Netherlands, the UK, and Germany, many of whom have trained in top-tier youth systems and represented European countries at junior levels.
This wave of additions follows successful efforts in recent years to naturalize players like Sheraldo Becker and Diego Biseswar. ’t Zand had previously been included in a provisional squad but withdrew, while Koswal’s case was recently confirmed by the federation as part of its “futuristic step forward” toward long-term success.
